Hi.

Welcome to My Roaring Forties. I document what I’m thinking about, what I’ve learnt and what I’m trying to achieve

Week 4: Overtraining looks great in the stats...for now

A week of overtraining this week - at least according to Garmin which started telling me on Thursday that my training is unproductive….

Some quick stats for the week:

  • Total Relative Effort for the week: 316 (thanks Werribee Gorge)

  • Total Distance for the week: 17km

  • Total Time for the week: 4hrs29m

The apparent culprit of the overtraining was a rather strenuous walk in Werribee State Gorge this week. It was very hilly - which would normally have been ok - but it was also very hot. I’m not especially good in the heat: I seem to have a very narrow optimal operating temperature and anything over 20 degrees is less than ideal. This particular day was 30 when we started and somewhere north of that when we finished.

The walk itself was fantastic and one day, in winter, i will go back and do the longer version. This week however, we stuck to the shorter circuit of 5km (thank goodness) which was 300m up the side of the gorge to start and then a slow descent down. All participants in the walk - human and dog - were exhausted after.

Quote of the Week

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
